Book Donation in Memory of Mrs Wanda Karolus

We've all heard the expression: if you can read this, thank a teacher. Wanda Karolus taught first grade from 1972 to 1994 and then finished her career in 2013 after co-coordinating and teaching the Honors program.  She passed away recently on October 7th.

The ability to read is the foundation of one's education and personal growth. Readers can escape to anywhere or imagine becoming anyone or anything through that universal vehicle: the book. As a primary grade educator, it was not only Wanda's goal to teach her class how to read, but to also introduce her students to the marvels revealed on the written page. After all, what could be more important than teaching someone to read?!

A number of people who had the sincere pleasure of working with Wanda during her time at Hiawatha thought it would be fitting and appropriate to donate money to the Hiawatha Elementary Library for the purchase of new books written for our emerging readers. Each title will have a book plate on the inside cover designating it as a gift to be enjoyed by all new readers, courtesy of Mrs. Wanda Karolus.
